Rule out a faulty appliance
A damaged appliance is a common reason for an RCD trip, particularly where heating elements, motors, extension leads, or outdoor equipment are involved. With the affected circuit switched off, unplug everything connected to it. Do not forget less obvious items such as chargers, appliances in cabinets, garage tools, outdoor lights, and equipment connected through extension cords.
Turn the circuit back on. If the RCD remains on with everything unplugged, reconnect appliances one at a time. Give each item a moment before plugging in the next. If the RCD trips immediately after a particular appliance is connected, unplug that appliance, leave it out of use, and have it checked or replaced.
Some faults are intermittent. A washing machine may trip only during a heating cycle, a kettle only when steam reaches a damaged cable, or garden equipment only after rain. If the RCD stays on during your test but trips again when an appliance is operating, stop using that appliance rather than repeatedly resetting the protection.
Never keep resetting an RCD to make a suspect appliance work. The trip is doing its job.
What if the RCD trips with everything unplugged?
If the RCD trips even when all appliances are unplugged, the issue is more likely to be within the fixed electrical installation. Possible causes include damaged cable insulation, a fault in a light fitting, moisture in an outdoor socket, a failed extractor fan, a defective immersion heater, or an issue in a connected outbuilding.
This is where basic checks should stop. Do not remove socket fronts, open switches, disconnect fixed appliances, or take the consumer unit cover off. Those tasks can expose live parts and can also make a fault harder to diagnose properly.
A qualified electrician can test the circuit with the right equipment, identify whether the problem is on a socket circuit, lighting circuit, fixed appliance, or external supply, and make a compliant repair. Should you use the RCD test button?
The test button is designed to confirm that the device trips when tested. Pressing it should switch off the circuits protected by that RCD. However, it may also interrupt clocks, computers, refrigeration, alarms, and other equipment, so choose a suitable time and make sure critical systems are managed first.
If the test button does not trip the RCD, or the device cannot be reset afterward, arrange an electrician without delay. Do not rely on an RCD that is not responding as expected.
